I have thing for demon summoningWait that didn t come out right I don t have thing for demon summoning As in I don t like summoning demons Actually I ve never summoned demon but I imagine that if I did summon Needled to Death (A Helping Hands Mystery a demon I wouldn t much enjoy it However I suppose that there is small chance that if I do one day summon demon then I might discover I enjoy it nd start off on some kind of demon summoning kick or ddiction At that point we could say I have thing for demon summoningWhat I mean to say is that I tend to enjoy stories One Last Time about summoning demons This is why the early seasons of Supernatural captivated me I stayed for the later seasons because the narrative deepenednd Castiel is wesome The Damned Busters plays into this predilection of mine From the get go Chesney Anstruther isn t happy bout Huckleberry Harvest accidentally summoning demon When his refusal to make deal which would cost him his soul naturally with this demon leads to labour strike in Hell Chesney finds himself in the middle of Grandmothers Against the War: How We Got Off Our Fannies and Stood Up for Peace a verywkward negotiation But it works out OK for him in the end because he gets superpowers Except it turns out that being crimefighter with demon sidekick is tougher than one might think though if your nswer was it sounds pretty tough then I guess you re smarter than me or just smartassThe first part of this book which follows Chesney s incitement of the labour strike in Hell is totally unlike the second part which concerns Chesney s time s the Actionary I ve read several reviews that wish the first part had been jettisoned nd one review that Out of His League actually preferred it to the superhero narrative I have to side with the former reviewers the first part of The Damned Busters is slownd First Degree Mudder a little dull As I read it I was thinking that it would make better short story than London's Best Kept Secret a novel indeed from what I gather from thefterword it was short story that Matthew Hughes then expanded Hell going on strike was good short story length gimmick but fter the initial laughter died down it uickly became tediousSo thank God who is Hughes in this case for the sudden changing of gears Chesney s pology to Satan is part of the back to work deal In return Chesney gets soul preserving deal with demon who becomes kind of familiar to him Thanks to the demon Chesney has crimefighting superpowers nd can rush bout s the Actionary saving damsels in distress nd generally feeling like his fictional hero the Driver He tries to impress the daughter of the head of the company he works for but in so doing he comes to the ttention of her father nd his mbitions to fight crime s political gambitUnlike the first part of this book the second part develops steadily At first Hughes delivers some of the same metafictional self Romeo for Real aware banternd observations that populate superheroic fiction these days Chesney s commentary on his evolution s the Actionary is pithy but nothing we haven t seen elsewhere Fortunately Hughes seems to recognize this nd the stakes get higher He keeps us guessing s Chesney begins to recognize there is something going on with Paxton s C group than just meta nalysis for the purposes of fighting crime Indeed Chesney isn t the only person involved who has LogoLounge 2 a deal with demon Bad Billy Brighton and that makes thingsll the interestingAt one point early in the book s Chesney watches the Reverend Billy Lee Hardacre mediate between Satan nd the leader of the demons union he wonders if he is really the hero of the story fter ll It seems like Hardacre is doing the important work It s valid uestion t this point because Chesney doesn t seem like hero material Indeed he s bit of pig But s the story develops so too does Chesney he s still pig but he s A Knife in the Heart a heroic pig character worthy of carrying story like this on his shoulders Someone who deserves to thwart evil plans of world dominationAlas Chesney s development from zero to hero is the exception nd not the rule The Damned Busters suffers from flat characters ll round Aside from Chesney they re ll essentially types of one kind or nother in their descriptions dialogue nd of one kind or A Bollywood Affair another in their descriptions dialoguend Both love interests Penny Paxton nd Melda McCall re prime examples of this Hughes plays up Penny s the conniving heiress who lways gets her way The Scent of Rosa's Oil and that sll she is Similarly Melda is the tough s nails yet mercurial beautician who can handle herself but is ttracted to the Actionary nonethelessIn both cases there s nothing really deeper going on here Normally with minor characters we Nobodys Angel (Willow Park, at least get peek t their motivations We learn bout their relationships with their parents Where s Penny s mother What re Penny s spirations if ny beyond hanging round her father s office Defending Hearts all the time Does Melda haveny dreams beyond the beauty parlour We never get glimpse t the person behind the character This is huge problem compounded by the fact that s much s Chesney improves he remains frail protagonist who is if sympathetic not ll that enjoyable person to hang Feel the Heat (Phoenix Agency, aroundThe Damned Busters has its moments It s humourousnd Hughes is great t using characters s gimmicks Sudden Fury (The Last Gunfighter, and devices However the book lacksny characters who generate enough emotional resonance to make the story than interesting diversion It s competent Spiky and enjoyable but could have been much betterMy reviews of To Hell BackCostume Not Included Have youlways dreamt of being superhero Sure you have What You haven t Well screw it go with me on this nywayChesney Armstruther is n ctuary for Dungeon of Death a large insurance firm if you re layman like me that means statistician whose life is in rut Heck maybe his life is the rut Rigidly devoted to numbers nd the odds while Love Rockets at the expense of social life Chesney finds poker with few of the boys to be his best bet t gaining A Deceptive Homecoming (Hattie Davish Mystery, a few friends But before he can host his first game in his small drearypartment he ccidentally summons demon from the pits of Hell fter hitting his thumb with hammer nd uttering some nonsensical profanities The demon insists Chesney sign over his soul in payment for summoning it but Chesney refuses pointing out he didn t ctually summon nyone This snafu leads to Hell s minions going on strike because of the contractual dispute which in turn leads to Satan negotiating settlement with Chesney in order to get things moving gain What is Chesney s end of the settlementChesney Armstruther is going to become superheroThe The Hired Man absurdity of this fantastical premise was too good to pass up when I heardbout it The book however is not what I expected nd I wound up reading what was of metaphysical satire than hero satire with tone that came off Fr The Damned Busters Hughes Matthew Livres Not Retrouvez The Damned Busters et des dmit that I'm rather enjoying The narrative still feels little rough Here by the Bloods around the edges but it still makes for interesting reading The Damned Busters To Hellnd Back Book The Damned Busters is supernatural dventure that blends rich nd unpredictable story with tone nd wit that provides plenty of laughs long the way A great balance of ction nd comedic situations with some romance thrown in for good measure this is great read The Da. ,

S Bound (Torn Trilogy, a bit uneven the longer it went The book starts off strongnd Chesney s rather dry nd dispassionate demeanor plays well in his protagonist role The villains s they were lso worked nicely with the Devil nd Chesney s unscrupulous boss either working gainst him or manipulating him s he tries to figure out how to be Loyalty and Lies a superhero two hourst time each dayAs the novel progressed though I found my ffinity towards certain characters diminishing Chesney included or never liking them in the first place like his love interests Poppy Paxton Fortunes Flames and Melda McCann The most comically endearing character was without uestion to me Chesney s endenture sidekick Xaphan wisecracking hellion with penchant for rum cigars nd 1920s gangster lingoXaphan in lot of ways cted s n nimated deus ex machina nd several of the scenes where he helps Chesney muddle through his powers responsibilities nd tough decisions were the best part of this book And because of that the divergence from story bout wannabe superhero to Claiming Her a storybout pawn in tug of war between Heaven nd Hell was palatable than it I thought it had ny right to beI guess my criticism boils down to my preconceptions s reader simply not being met It s good book nd offers n interesting story but it doesn t feel like the book gets to the heart of the matter until well past the halfway mark If you enjoy good dose of humor in your Murder Go Round action novels this is pretty good book to consider but don t trick yourself into thinking it s How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World: A Comparative Analysis a superhero novels it only flirts with that premise long enough to go where it seems the rest of the series is headed It s hard to make me laugh Call it Alcohol Fuels: Policies, Production, And Potential a personal failing But it s true While other people gasp forir in fit of jocularity I m merely smiling wondering bout the depth of the humour involved The Damned Busters To Hell Cambridge Modern History volumes 1-5 and Back by Matthew Hughes is the first time since reading Terry Fallis The Best Laid Plans Ictually burst into laughter while reading The Heart Of The Hawk (Book 1) a book The titlelone was enough to piue my curiosity Spices, Saints, and Saracens: The Egyptian Wanderings of a Dominican Friar, 1483 an intriguing play on the 1955 British filmbout WWII RAF dam bombersHughes delivery is dry unexpected often with remarkable turn of phrase At first I thought I d be reading Empire of the Waves: Voyage of the Moon Child accessible variation on Rushdie s theme in The Satanic Verses And while therere similarities by way of the timeless opposition of the divine The Object of Performance: The American Avant-Garde since 1970 and profane Hughes story is utterly unpretentiousnd consistently deliciously irreverent Because of that there were moments I was reminded of some of the famous scenes from Monty Python s Flying Circus And then Of Mice and Men again moments of Douglas Adams whacky surreal scenariosPast the first few chapters my opinion changedgain so that I thought I was reading graphic novel minus the graphics But the writing is so tight nd the character development so strong even original that the stereotypes of the superhero paradigm vanished We re presented with socially deficient ctuary in fact very Canadian hero in that he doesn t consider himself heroic nor necessarily does he do heroic deeds He simply wants to id in the pursuit of justice justice tempered with compassion nd I Was Anastasia a bumblingdmirable loveable naivet that lands him in Choice of the Cat an unusual deal with the Devilnd Three Cups of Deceit a strike in Hell while Himself Above rewrites the epic saga known to mere mortalss Life As our hero s slippery sidekick we re dished up Sparrow Road a Cagney esue stogey sucking rum guzzling demon that breaks mostrchetypal standardsIn the climax of A Banner With a Strange Device: A Novel of Boston all this zany narrative one isgain reminded of classic literature in scene that easily parallels Hades bduction of Persephone But in what ppears to be uintessential Hughes facility he turns that parallel into something completely uniue so that we re left with n original satisfying denouement Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World and conclusion The Damned Busters should definitely find its way to your bookshelf or eReader if you re cravingn entertaining The Point of It All: A Lifetime of Great Loves and Endeavors and engaging bit of escapist literature Advance reader copy the book is due outt the end of MayI bounced hard off this one And it s not because I read in Yoga: The Art of Adjusting audio withoutccess to the rt No we were ctually doing really good for the first uarter with the story of The Neural Basis of Free Will a hapless nerdys opposed to geeky I know my classifications thank you ctuary who ccidentally summons demon nd causes labor strike in hell It was funny it was whacky it was sneakily uite sharp bout good Locked and Loaded (U.S. Marshals, and evil the writing was crispAnd then the whole thing jolted sideways into stupid self indulgent masturbatory superhero fantasies I had sinking feeling when the blonde bombshell Past Destinies appeared flipped forward went hell nond backed Travels: Collected Writings, 1950-1993 away fast I could unpack why this went so suddenly toxic I could talkbout how incredibly fucking over I If Wishes Were Horses am these sorts of self consciously self mocking booksbout geeky sci fi nerds who want to be superheroes but when they get chance to it s not s easy s it looks nd they have embarrassment suicky dventures but through ccident nd cleverness end up getting the keys to the city nd ccess to the walking vagina of the moment nyway I could talk bout how what I find most obnoxious is the underlying narrative of power how this white middle class well educated guy feels so oppressed nd powerless Rainbow Brite: Starlite Saves the Day and emasculatednd how he gains power by hitting some people A Social History of Modern Art, Volume 2: Art in an Age of Bonapartism, 1800-1815 and sticking his dick in someone I could talkbout how this feel good redemptive underdog crap is ctually deeply toxic story that lets bunch of privileged people feel smug nd uthentically downtrodden But I m so over this book in The Unspeakable Mind all of its seventeen thousand incarnations I can t even be fucking bothered to finish itnd confirm my worst suspicions from the forward glances I took This is tough one to review I suppose uneven is the word to start with It s lmost like two separate stories that don t have much to do with one nother except that one is The Circumstances By Way circumstances by way other is ble to happen I know that sounds like it should be connected but it s sorta like using the story know that sounds like it should be connected but it s sorta like using the story Murder at Beechwood a sperm cell fighting its way ton egg in order to set up my life story Related sure but not exactly the most obvious plot moveThe first uarter of the book is the set up It has some humorous bits but it s mostly n excuse for the uthor to enjoy how clever he is I didn t really care for this part of the story t ll nd spent most of the time wondering when nd how we were going to get to the book they talk Ask an Astronaut: My Guide to Life in Space about on the back coverThe rest of the book is somewhat standard superhero story but told through the eyes of Revelations from Revelation (Mass Market) a person who is functional Jane and the Stillroom Maid (Jane Austen Mysteries, autistic He doesn t understand people he doesn t understand social snd he doesn t really. Understand how the world works But he does understand comics nd therefore thinks he s ready to fight crime even if it is with the Satellite assistance of HellThat part of the book was funnd interesting Blank Darkness and often genuinely funny Unfortunately with the first uarter in front of it I can t really recommend the book Or if I do it would be with the suggestion that the mileage will vary wildly on the first uarter of it Regardless I m not sure I ll be readingny of the proposed trilogy I guess that s This book was hilarious A socially challenged office worker ccidentally summons demon Makers and ends up throwing hell into strike since The Heart Has Its Reasons a deal wasn t made As result they make Americana: A 400-Year History of American Capitalism a deal where he gets to be superhero nd he partners up with demon who loves to drink In the end he ends up getting the girl Overall the book was hilarious nd I can t wait to read the next one An ctuary Kneller's Happy Campers and one well suited to his job in every way inadvertently summons demon while erecting Haunted Houses For the Millions a poker tablend hammering his finger While less than menable to the idea of selling his soul especially with incontrovertible proof that there ctually is such Reclaiming Love: Radical Relationships in a Complex World a things eternal damnation he sets into motion Playing with Fire: How the Bible Ignites Change in Your Soul a set of events that has extremely humorous conseuencesTo say that theuthor Matthew Hughes can write is like sayingwell I was going to go for some sports The People's Songs: The Story of Modern Britain in 50 Records analogy but that just doesn t uite work this is fantasy book for crying out loud Let s say it s like saying n Ogier can build house or since he s the Jack Vance guy it s like saying Cudgel is uick on the uptakeHe s genius nd the first third of this book definitely proves it It s witty clever funny The Dawn of Christmas and just plainmazingly well written Chesney Arnstruther the heroic ctuary is not only n So this was Bark an interestingnd uneven novel I ve written Eden's Gate a lot of reviews but this is by far the most difficult because I didn t like or dislike the novel Ilmost considered not writing Her Bear Twins a reviewt Bumps, Bruises and Bouncing Back: A Young Woman's Adventures into Womanhood all because I was just sombivalent Matthews Hughes The Damned Busters is wholly original novel from Angry Robot Books It is not however the novel I wanted to read Let me explainFilled with fun cartoony characters Hughes pits Chesney Arnstruther n My Lady Viper (Tales From the Tudor Court, actuary of no particular distinction whoccidentally summons demon gainst the hordes of the underworld Oops Everyone gets dropped into bit of pickle when he refuses to sell his soul thus sending Hell into labor negotiations from Hell Shenanigans ensue s the denizens of Hell go on strike As part of the bargain that puts Hell back to work Chesney gets the use of his own personal demon who he uses to become crime fighterFor the first third of the book the shenanigans re rousing success Satan few ngels Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man a televangelistnd Chesney The Light in Our Houses all find themselves locked in room hassling over contract for Satan s overworked minions It s so bsurd it s brilliant There is loads of snappy dialog nd hilarious situations that could only come from unionized labor Hughes does well in the space creating series of encounters that How to Get People to Do Stuff: The Psychology of Persuasion are often laugh out loud funnyThe unfortunate part is the brilliance only lasts for the first third of the book Once Chesney strikes his deal with Hell the book descends into pretty boring crime fighter yarn There re wkward stereotypical encounters with women He is taken dvantage of by few not so benevolent powerful people Not only was the novel less interesting by this point lot of Hughes wit seems to fall way Highland Hucow: Milking Marie as well What was light witty novel that read like Call the Fire Brigade: Fighting London's Fires a situational comedy deevolved into metaphysical discussion bout the meaning of existenceBy the end of The Damned Busters I was completely caught off guard by what was very esoteric conclusion that left me unsatisfied Like the second half of the book this ending wasn t what I wanted to read I felt betrayed by the promise Hughes made in the opening chapters when he failed to deliver the same level of wit nd charm throughoutI would lmost recommend Hughes novel based solely on the opening The idea is incredibly clever Edward Keating and he writes it with rareplomb I can opening The idea is incredibly clever Berlin på 8 kapitel and he writes it with rareplomb I can help but wonder if The Damned Busters would have been better suited Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City as novella that ended when Hell went back to work If that were the case I d be giving it my highest recommendation As it stands I m not sure it s great investment of time This book is pretty much just light investment of time This book is pretty much just light fun Think long the lines of Good Omens or something like that Some of the ideas re fun though since I ve read Good Omens nd some of Terry Pratchett I ve read Good Omens Cross (Jack Taylor, and some of Terry Pratchett other work the stylend ideas weren t entirely fresh Still combining that with the superhero spect made it fun especially for someone who has recently got back into comics I lso enjoyed that the superhero character is The Lady and the Generals: Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma's struggle for freedom a number crunchingctuary before he s Stripped to the Bone a superhero nots Trials: On Death Row in Pakistan a cover for it And he loves both jobsI noticednother reviewer being dubious bout the involvement of female characters here There s certain Signs From The Afterlife: How the Other Side can comfort and inspire you amount of stereotyping Humor is suchn individual thing that it won t surprise me if many people enjoyed The Damned Busters than I did Not that I didn t enjoy it I thought it was good if not great Don t wanna get involved in grade inflation mong book reviews so can we say three nd half stars out of fiveChesney n introverted ctuary ccidentally summons The Story of My Purity: A Novel a demon bashed his thumb bleeds on five sided table Make Mead Like a Viking: Traditional Techniques for Brewing Natural, Wild-Fermented, Honey-Based Wines and Beers and utters string of nonsense syllables which unfortunately correspond to Billie Holiday an invocation boy if I had dime Having no use for the demon Chesney dismisses him which is the straw breaking the camel s back on n ongoing labor dispute in Hell The upshot is to get the whole mess unraveled Satan has to offer Chesney freebie whatever he wants without the collateral of his soul So Chesney decides to be costumed crimefighterWhat follows is largely misadventures s Chesney discovers that The Leader a crimefighting isn ts clearcut The Human Sexes as shown in the comics or comixs Hughes consistently spells it which Cannibal Sector 1 addsn unwanted Robert Crumb flavor to it The Essential Andhra Cookbook with Hyderabadi Specialities and b ethicsre complicated when the powers of Hell re used to do goodHughes prose is musing without being s precious nd twee Zohar (5 Volume set) as say Eoin Colfer I did feel the whole thing was uneven possibly
